MANILA — The military said Friday a member of a militant Islamic separatist group has been detained for suspected involvement in the murder of a 40-year-old woman and her seven children in the southern Philippines earlier this week.

The killings occurred late Wednesday in a remote village in Zamboanga del Norte Province, about 700 kilometers south of Manila, a military official said. The woman, identified as Evangeline Balios, and her children aged between 1 and 13 were killed inside their thatched house. (Kyodo News)
